Sphingomonas paucimobilis - an emerging pathogen

چکیده
Sphingomonas Paucimobilis is an aerobic, oxidase positive, catalase positive, motile gram negative bacterium, opportunistic pathogen. 1 It is widely found in nature, especially in water and soil and has been isolated frequently from hospital water systems, mechanical ventilators etc. The bacteria are known to cause infections in immunocompromised and hospitalized patients. It rarely affects immunocompetent patients. . In various studies, Sphingomonas Paucimobilis has been shown to be a causative agent in immunocompromised patients and in hospital acquired postoperative endophtalmitis, osteomyelitis and septic arthritis. 2-4 There have been case reports of outbreak of sphingomonas sepsis in NICU. 5 Various infections caused by Sphingomonas paucimobilis include bacteria, septic arthritis, endophthalmitis, peritonitis, catheter related infections, pyoderma and ventilator associated pneumonia. 2-6 Infections in immunocompetent individuals is rare. We report a case of Sphingomonas paucimobilis sepsis in a ten year old male child.

Recurrent complicated urinary tract infection due to rare pathogen Sphingomonas paucimobilis: contamination or real deal?
Sphingomonas paucimobilis is an aerobic, oxidase-positive, yellow-pigmented, non-fermentative, Gram-negative opportunistic pathogen that rarely causes infections in humans. It is commonly found in nosocomial environments and, despite its low clinical virulence, it can be responsible for several different infections especially among patients with underlying disease. Here we describe a clinical c...
متن کاملCorrection to: “In Silico Detection of Virulence Gene Homologues in the Human Pathogen Sphingomonas Spp.”
There is an ongoing debate about the clinical significance of Sphingomonas paucimobilis as a virulent bacterial pathogen. In the present study, we investigated the presence of different virulence factors and genes in Sphingomonas bacteria. We utilized phylogenetic, comparative genomics and bioinformatics analysis to investigate the potentiality of Sphingomonas bacteria as virulent pathogenic ba...
متن کاملA case of peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis caused by Sphingomonas paucimobilis
Sphingomonas paucimobilis is an aerobic Gram-negative bacillus found in soil and water. Knowledge regarding the role of this infectious agent is limited because it is rarely isolated from human material. Furthermore, it is an unusual pathogen in cases of peritoneal dialysis (PD)-associated peritonitis. The clinical courses and outcomes of peritonitis caused by S. paucimobilis are variable. Wher...
متن کاملSphingomonas paucimobilis osteomyelitis in an immunocompetent patient. A rare case report and literature review.
Sphingomonas paucimobilis occurs widely both in natural and nosocomial environments, including hospital water systems, respiratory therapy equipment, and laboratory instruments. It is an opportunistic pathogen that rarely causes infections in humans. Among S. paucimobilis nosocomial infections, osteomyelitis is particularly rare. Almost all infections occur in patients with comorbidities such a...
متن کاملThe Draft Genome Sequence of Sphingomonas paucimobilis Strain HER1398 (Proteobacteria), Host to the Giant PAU Phage, Indicates That It Is a Member of the Genus Sphingobacterium (Bacteroidetes)
The draft genome sequence of Sphingomonas paucimobilis host index number (HER) 1398, host of the giant PAU phage isolated from silk moths (Bombyx mori), indicates that this isolate belongs within the genus Sphingobacterium. We suggest that Sphingomonas paucimobilis strain HER1398 be reclassified as Sphingobacterium paucimobilis strain HER1398.
